Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum

Enjoy a visit to the museum at 5 Kidder Court, Nevada City and then call RSVP to hear about the varied volunteer opportunities. Summer hours are Friday through Tuesday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Oct. 31.

Senior peer counselors

RSVP volunteers over 55 years of age are needed for the Senior Peer Counselors project in western Nevada County. Volunteers will draw on their life experiences and their training to assist seniors having difficulty coping with some of life’s challenges. A Behavioral Health staff counselor provides training sessions before matching the volunteer with a senior and will provide weekly support meetings for peer counselors to aid them in developing supportive counseling relationships.

Friendly visitors

The Friendly Visitors and Telephone Reassurance program is seeking new volunteers to meet the needs of homebound or socially isolated seniors. A 90-year-old lady in Penn Valley would enjoy a visitor to share her interest in current events and community activities. A visitor who could call on an 86-year-old lady living three miles above Nevada City would decrease her lonely times due to giving up driving.

School has started and bilingual tutors are needed to assist English language learners in the classroom.
