Freedom of Speech is still alive at the growers market!

[A letter-writer] wants a group of individuals to have a venue for political discussions at the market rather than the sale of fruits, vegetables and other goods, which it is intended for (“No more free speech?,” July 10).

Speaking as an individual rather than a board member of the Nevada City Growers Market, I believe there’s a time and place for holding such discussions. Providing a booth for such activities has been met with many complaints from patrons of the market and vendors as well.

People who come to our market do not wish to have politics forced upon them while they try to enjoy shopping. This is a place for tourists and neighbors to taste the fruits of our labors, not to debate local or any other politics.

If [the letter-writer] is looking for a venue to enlighten, discuss or debate issues that are important to him and his friends, I suggest they have a town hall meeting to accommodate this need, and not disrupt our market or accuse us of abridging his so-called freedom of speech. Say anything you like, but you’re not getting a booth to do it in!
