Retreat will be cost effective

Mr. Gaebler’s idea for a county department heads’ retreat is a sound one. It is not original; businesses far smaller than Nevada County do this regularly. It could save in money far more than it costs.

A retreat is not a vacation, it is an opportunity for the participants to not only discuss particular topics, but to get to know each other, and privately discuss inter-office relations and solve problems. We have a number of new department heads for whom this will be invaluable. It permits full discussion away from telephones, e-mails, faxes and the distractions of a normal working day.

It will help our public servants, elected and appointed, do their jobs better for Nevada County in at least two ways:

1. Allow participants to really know what the others are doing, so they can work as a team, not managing individual bureaucracies, which is always a temptation in a large organization. Knowing each other will make communication easier and more frequent when needed.

2. By coordinating and knowing who is doing what, to enable quicker service to a public sometimes confused as to what department handles what problems. Service to the public is what government is all about, and to make this available is to fulfill the most important work of the county.

Therefore, Mr. Gaebler should be congratulated for doing his job well and assisting the other department heads to do likewise.
