Retired and senior volunteers
If you are 55 years or older, sign up with the Retired and Senior Volunteers Program to help our community. Accident, liability and excess auto insurance provided. Mileage reimbursement available. Call 271-0255, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., weekdays. Or stop by 714 W. Main St., Suite 2, Grass Valley.
Help someone who has become isolated due to the loss of a loved one or because they can no longer drive. A social visit of an hour a week needed. Provide friendship and support, share a hobby, read a book, play cards, or just visit. Training, education and support are provided.
Visit new moms at the hospital. Deliver gifts and information to encourage early-childhood immunizations. One morning a week for about an hour.
Information, assistance specialist
Provide information, referrals and assistance to people of all ages using a database of Nevada County resources. Must be able to communicate well over the phone, be an active listener, think on your feet, and be experienced with PCs.
Teach basic Internet skills: sending and receiving e-mail, searching the Net and travel planning.
Work with school-age children after school on their homework and help with fun activities; times and locations vary. Help is also needed at Family Nights.
Do filing, typing and assist with clerical duties. Training is provided; typing and computer skills helpful.
Work with individual or small groups of students in first- and second-grade.
Help needed shelving books, shelf reading to make sure the books are in the correct order, and cleaning books.
Cuddle cats and walk dogs.
