Rethinking NH 2020

I remember open, grassy fields in downtown Grass Valley and pine forests at the southern end of town. I remember a magnificent sequoia that used to tower above downtown Nevada City. I remember magical stories of the beautiful resort in Town Talk, and I am saddened by old pictures of the grassy parkway along Wolf Creek.

It’s almost unbearably ironic that a small bunch of agitators claiming – in the name of the people – that they want to protect my property rights, are trying to destroy the only Board of Supervisors in my lifetime that has actually invited the people’s input or tried to protect the beauty of the local area – including my property.

The sort of destruction that I have observed here in the past, and that is presently being contemplated by NID for Banner Mountain, is exactly what we can expect if we are short-sighted enough to support groups like PYPR and CABPRO, or candidates like Drew Bedwell who repeatedly disdain good-faith efforts to accommodate their concerns while practicing a sort of rabidly disingenuous partisan politics we’ve never had to endure before locally.

The plain truth, it seems to me, is that only unusual intelligence, integrity, goodwill and commitment to community will allow us a prosperous and gracious future here in Nevada County. Our current BOS represents these qualities better than any I’ve seen before. I can only hope that reason, decency and intellectual honesty will prevail again when we vote next fall.
