Respectful debate

As a conservative, I wish to assure liberals that the writer of the “Liberals defined” letter does not speak for us. I’m sorry, but with the help of demagogues like Rush Limbaugh, the reactionary zealots on the right have confused “liberals” with the radical zealots on the left.

With respect to taxes, conservatives know that liberals want taxes to be fair. A respectful debate between us should focus on defining fairness – as in removing favoritism to special interest groups. In an episode of “West Wing,” a liberal and conservative politician could agree on the ethanol subsidy fiasco, for example. Real life could imitate fiction if politicians could stop giving lip service to morality and start practicing it with respectful debate and working together to solve our major problems.

The demagogues and our enemies want a civil war between red and blue states, counties and towns, inflamed by letters like “Liberals defined.” Let’s fool them by painting ourselves red, white and blue!
