Reproductive freedom essential

Some health care decisions are difficult to make. Usually, people are trusted to seek medical care on their own, without interference, but some would take this power away from individuals and give it to legislators. Why?

Twenty-nine years ago this month, Roe v. Wade affirmed a woman’s right to decide whether to bear or beget a child, including the right to decide whether or not to terminate her unwanted pregnancy. This action enabled all women, not just those who had the means to secure safe (but illegal) abortions, to better control their destinies. It put an end to unsafe back-alley abortions. Although we can all agree it’s more desirable to prevent a pregnancy than to terminate it, the fact remains that no one is perfect and systems fail.

As individuals, we need to become informed about our reproductive lives and all the options available to us. This will enable informed choices based on facts, not myths, and to obtain unbiased assistance in this.

As citizens, we need to ensure reproductive freedom remains accessible to all. The right to privacy is basic to this freedom.
