Reminder needed

When we selected Nevada County as our home, many of us were awe struck with its beauty and felt a sense of responsibility for protecting it. Since then, many of us have become complacent, even apathetic, about our surroundings and our responsibility for its maintenance.

I believe that this might be time to remind ourselves of our individual and collective responsibility for fire safety and protection. A significant number of the people who currently reside in Nevada County arrived here after 1988. And, for those of us who were here in 1988, the memory seems to dull over time.

What text and photographic information does The Union have in its archives that could be used to remind us of that experience; to heighten our awareness of how easy it would be to lose what we have? I’d like to suggest that The Union reprint a series of selected articles from the 49er Fire archives, perhaps over a period of several days, to reignite the consciousness of those who experienced that fire, and to educate those who did not.

All of us would benefit from a reminder that a simple match and a handful of wastepaper could destroy it all.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
