Remembering a special angel

A few weeks ago, Nevada City lost a very special angel.

Her specialty was intense compassion, understanding and selfless giving to those who were experiencing personal or familial times of trouble or suffering. Like an emotional magnet, she seemed drawn to those in desperate need. Mysteriously, often spontaneously, she gave all she had, which was considerable, to those living in a world of grief. She was equally determined to keep her random acts of kindness private, to be known only by those who received them. It was almost as if she didn’t want people, in general, to know what a truly good person she really was.

As human beings, we all inevitably have at least one thing in common – mortality. Unfortunately, we all too often tend to focus on how we die rather than how we live. Yet how we live, during our unavoidable one-way journey to death, is ultimately what matters. In the end, it is the means, not the ends, that define the meaning of life.

How this special angel lived, how she so frequently helped others, without any expectation, without any string attached – that is what her legacy should be. And that is what it will be.

That special angel was Karen Miller, and I am honored to say that she and her brother, Ron, were my friends. In the unique way that they lived their lives, they will always remain a source of inspiration.
