Remember our common good

I was so disappointed to read that our federal legislature failed to pass legislation that would have mandated more fuel efficient vehicles. Disappointed and ashamed. How little vision and courage our leadership demonstrates.

Environmental issues aside, greater fuel efficiency could have helped reduce our dependency on Middle Eastern oil, a shift with many ramifications for our “war on terrorism.” Without these kinds of intelligent, multifaceted shifts in national priorities, we will be left with President Bush’s enthusiasm for military solutions.

Until our leaders raise their standards of action, we are left to raise our own. Rationalizations aside, everyone knows what’s right. We simply need to weigh our self-centered agendas against the common good. That’s not so simple. and our well-being depends on it.
