Reagan not great

Honor Ronald Reagan’s life of service, but don’t be fooled by the calculated mythologizing of a man who often had difficulty distinguishing between fantasy and reality.

He promised to reduce the national debt, then ran up three times as much debt as we had in the two centuries before he took office. His administration included a record number of officials convicted of misconduct, including those who deceived Congress and the American people by illegally supplying arms to Iran. (If Democrats had done this, they would have been convicted of treason.)

Reagan’s anti-communism did not defeat the Soviet bloc. It collapsed from within. After billions of wasted dollars on his Star Wars fantasy, there still is no workable anti-missile system. Under Reagan, the U.S. trained Osama bin Laden and gave chemical and other weapons to Saddam Hussein.

Reagan ignored the AIDS crisis; gutted social, environmental, education and health programs; and actually raised taxes and spending while doing so. Reagan was not even our most popular president. Clinton had better poll numbers when he left office.

Give Mr. Reagan a respectful funeral but forget about putting his face on the dime or Mt. Rushmore.
