Readers’ Corner

There are just about as many nonprofit agencies in Nevada County as pine trees, I’m convinced. Between the nonprofits and the myriad service clubs, we have an embarrassment of riches.

I keep coming across readers who don’t realize we have a nonprofits columnist, Pam Fortner. Her column appears on Page A3 every Monday.

We came up with the idea of one person to write about nonprofit agencies because it was daunting to think of covering them all. That way, the nonprofits can give Pam ideas about their needs, wants and activities, and she can keep track of all the fund-raisers and other events they have.

Readers looking for volunteer opportunities can read Pam’s column and see if there is a group they want to volunteer for. I’m just more and more convinced that people is this county are the most generous I’ve ever seen. Really, most people I know volunteer for something.

Here at The Union, we give employees paid time off to volunteer in the community. That’s pretty nice, and I think it encourages volunteering. When I went to San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, last year with the Nevada City Rotary Club, I was able to bank all my hours into one day that was paid for by the company.

Deadline for Pam’s column is 5 p.m. the Wednesday before the column runs. Information can be faxed, mailed or e-mailed to
