Way Cool Back to School: It’s hard to think about kids going back to school when it’s 100 degrees outside, but it’s time for Women of Worth’s annual backpack and supply drive. This is the fifth year for this worthwhile cause, which supplies local kids with brand new school supplies so they don’t have any anxiety about going back to school. Having the essential school supplies during the peer pressure-filled years of school can greatly improve a young person’s self-esteem.

Women Of Worth will again collect and distribute new backpacks, school supplies and gift certificates to children in need within Nevada County and North Placer counties. Classroom supplies & appropriate board games are also welcome. The drive starts July 15 and continues until Aug. 31.

You can bring backpacks and supplies to The Union’s lobby. Other collection points are Weaver Auto & Truck Center, 400 Idaho-Maryland Road, Grass Valley; Magnussen’s Auburn Toyota, 800 Nevada Street, Auburn; Dr. Randall Hensley, 17119 Placer Hills Road, Meadow Vista. Have questions? Call Sandy at (530) 878-1183 or Rose at (530) 268-1131.

Items needed: New backpacks, new school supplies, filler paper (wide and college rule), spiral notebooks, pens, pencils, combination locks, folders, glue, scissors, highlighters, crayons, erasers, rulers, pencil sharpeners, math kits, tissues, hand sanitizer, book covers, etc. New classroom supplies (design making scissors, board games for rainy day recess, playground equipment such as small beanbags to toss around, jump ropes, playing cards such as Old Maid, Go Fish, etc., age appropriate puzzles.) Gift certificates to department and specialty stores for the purchase of new school clothing, PE clothes, shoes and school supplies. E-mail contact: sandy@women-of-worth.org or rose@women-of-worth.org.

Teachers and others who know of a student in need are encouraged to contact Sandy or Rose with their referral. Confidentiality will be maintained on all referrals.

Take me out to the ball game: Karen Campbell has the tickets you have been waiting for. Giants/Dodgers Sunday, July 15, 1:05 p.m. start. Bleacher seats $35 each. Bonds is getting closer. Lots of Nevada County fans going. Call Karen 274-3839.

Fourth of July Parade: It was so much fun seeing the parade, all the kids, the great marching bands, etc.! And I loved seeing Marie Johnson, the grand marshal. If it’s a woman is it grand marshaless? If you see Touchdown Productions’ Gil Dominguez, he’s in mourning about the sale of his precious “Commander,” so don’t be too tough on the guy!
