Outdoor shopping opportunity: The Grass Valley downtown merchants are once again having their annual Sidewalk Sale today on Mill and Main streets. This is a fun time to check out all the bargains and feel good about supporting our local merchants. One reason shopping locally is important is the fact that we have these stores to go to. Have you ever been to a downtown that is abandoned? (Marysville comes to mind.) Not only is it depressing, it’s not exactly conducive to tourism, either.
Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County: I heard from Mrs. Rooter (aka Lindsay Marich, married to Mr. Rooter) about an upcoming event.
“Mr. Rooter (and me, Mrs. Rooter) have joined hands with the Coalition for a Drug Free Nevada County. We are in the business sector, sub-group. We are seeking funds to help Douglas Coursey put on a “Day of Awakening” concert in August. We are shy of the monetary costs by $3,400. I’m only trying to reach business owners who are interested in a drug-free Nevada County. (Who wouldn’t be?) If they could call me for more info on monetary donations at 477-0650, I will fill them in on how the money will benefit this wonderful, one-day event at Western Gateway Park on Aug.
Almost scammed on CraigsList: Ryan Harris came into see me this week about a bad experience he had trying to sell a car on CraigsList.org.
He listed the car at $11,999 and received an e-mail from a man in India who said his name was Justin Mark and he wanted to buy the car for his wife, who lives in Canada. Now, here is the scam: The potential “buyer” said he tried to buy a car that was damaged from another buyer in California and had a cashier’s check for $19,999. He would send that to Ryan to cash, and then Ryan would send this man the $8,000 overage. The man’s “agent” wanted Ryan to send the $8,000 via Western Union as soon as he cashed the check.
Had Ryan gone along with this, he could have cashed the check (which was phony) and wired the $8,000 to the agent. But about five days later the check would have bounced, and Ryan’s account would have been debited $19,999! Ryan (who is a young man, by the way) wants to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else ” that’s why he was so willing to share his story!
