“For the Birds” fundraiser: Neighborhood Center of the Arts announces its second annual “For the Birds” birdhouse auction and fundraiser.
It will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Nevada City Winery, 321 Spring St., Nevada City. The event benefits the Neighborhood Center, a nonprofit center for artists with developmental disabilities. Fifty-two birdhouses decorated by artists from the community, NCA and local celebrities will be on display for silent auction bidding through Thursday at Nevada City Winery.
This year, a number of other Nevada City stores and businesses also will be displaying birdhouses in the lead-up to the event. Thursday’s event will feature the close of silent auction bidding and also a live auction of select birdhouses. Guests at the event will enjoy a tasting of six Nevada City wines, food from Afternoon Deli and live entertainment by guest performers including Tanya Scarlett, Daniel Brooks with Larry Lansburg and NCA’s own Kim Pearson.
Special functional and decorative birdhouses have been created by a diverse group of people working in various media. Artists bringing their skills as painters to the project include Jerianne Van Dijk and Irene Nicolas. In addition to decorated wooden birdhouses, several unique clay pieces have been created by Yvon Dockter and Emilie Righetti. Other artists have constructed birdhouses from fiber, stone and gourds. The creative energies of decorators such as Brooks, Howard Levine and Utah Phillips are reflected in quirky mixed-media assemblages featuring dolls, animals, flowers, beads, stones, compact discs and even candy.
Birdhouses – an ideal holiday gift – are now on display at Nevada City Winery and at the following Nevada City locations: The Earth Store, Gray Goose, Harmony Books, Laloo, The Magic Carpet, Maiden Lane, Main Street Kids, Mostly Clay, Mountain Song, Novak’s, Scotch Broom and Toad Hall Book Shop. Tickets for Thursday’s event are $25 and are available at NCA, at the rear of 200 Litton Dr., Grass Valley, at The Bookseller in Grass Valley and Nevada City Winery in Nevada City, or by calling (530) 272-7287.
