Barbecue Battle of the Sexes: Are women the unsung heroes of the barbecue? United Way plans to find out with its Barbecue Battle of the Sexes set for Aug. 16. Teams of either five men or five women will compete at the Holiday Inn Express parking lot in Grass Valley. Tom Fitzsimmons of KNCO claims he is a master barbecuer, but Ms. Readers’ Corner plans to “clean his grill” with her team! He will be so sorry he made those rude comments about the female persuasion!
Think about getting a team together from work, book clubs, and among friends, and take part in this fun competition! The winning male and female teams will compete in September for the title of best barbecue team of Nevada County. You can download an application form at http://www.uwnc.org, or I can give you one if you come into The Union. More later, but spectators can buy “tasting tickets” to vote on which team is best.
Want to see Yankees vs. Giants? Karen Campbell has some tickets. There are two tickets for Sunday’s game, taking a bus there and back with a bunch of baseball fans. Those are $116 each and include a tailgate party and the bus. If you want to drive yourself, she has four tickets for Saturday’s game in a lower box for $50 each; and 10 tickets for Sunday’s game, also $50 each – what she paid for them. Call her at 274-3839.
Dog Park Association: Julie Clark told me the Gold Country Dog Park Association will be holding a yard sale this weekend at Pearsons Feed Store, 17905 Penn Valley Drive, in Penn Valley. Funds raised will support the park, both at its current location in Western Gateway Park and at its future location that has yet to be determined. Hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check out the group on the Web at groups.google.com/ group/nevada-county-dog-park. If you want to write them, the address is Gold Country Dog Park Association, P.O. Box 2194, Penn Valley, CA 95946.
Watch Team Penning: Mary Lou Gilbert says the Nevada County Horsemen are holding their BIG Silver Buckle Team Penning event starting at 4 p.m. this Saturday. With $400 added to the jackpot, there’ll be some nice prize checks to the first, second and third-place team winners, and a beautiful Montana silver buckle to the first place team. Come out and watch – the snack shack will be open, and see some great team penning. Free admission; for info, call 272-4238 or 273-9326.
55th Nevada City High School Reunion: Mr. Bolton called to let me know this is happening on Saturday. Can you imagine? It will be at the Rod and Gun Club. If you were in this class, call Mr. Bolton at 743-9748 to get details.
