Bumpersnicker spotted in town: I haven’t had one of these in awhile, but Capt. Vic called to tell me about this one: “Guns Don’t Kill People, Drivers With Cell Phones do.”
Do you read the stock listings? We’re wondering if The Union should continue to print them. Many other papers have stopped because so much information is available on the Internet. Send me an e-mail or give me a call if you have a strong opinion. If you get my voicemail, just indicate yes or no. I won’t be able to call you back.
Calling would-be organic gardeners: An organic gardening workshop will take place Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply. Discussion will focus on summer cover crops and summer pruning of fruit trees, as well as on participation in a hands-on drip irrigation demonstration. The fee is $10 and you can call 272-4769, ext. 105, to register. Peaceful Valley is located at 125 Clydesdale Court, Grass Valley. The instructor is Linda Nowak-Carlson, and she has nearly 30 years of organic gardening experience. Also, she works part time at Peaceful Valley and co-owns Blue Oak Nursery with Jill Hersh.
Burma Shave: These came from reader Norm Lino:
TRAINS DON’T WANDER
ALL OVER THE MAP
‘CAUSE NOBODY SITS

Remember these? Norm provided this explanation. “For those who never saw any of the Burma Shave signs, here is a quick lesson in our history of the 1930s and ’40s. Before there were interstates, when everyone drove the old two-lane roads, Burma Shave signs would be posted all over the countryside in farmers’ fields. They were small red signs with white letters. Five signs, about 100 feet apart, each containing one line of a four line couplet … and the obligatory fifth sign advertising Burma Shave, a popular shaving cream.”
Here’s another of the actual signs:
