Gather the Women tonight: Gather the Women invites all women to join together for an “Evening of Opportunity” tonight from 6:45 to 9 at the Nevada City Methodist Church, 230 Broad St. Event organizer Marilyn Nyborg says the evening will include the building of women’s circles, project circles (e.g., a teen talking circle) and other opportunities that will evolve from participants. The energy at the last Gather the Women event was amazing – a testament to the incredible women we have here in Nevada County.

Can you build a fence? When the phone rang at Ed and Christine Batista’s house, on the other end of the line was a frail voice asking about a dog the Batistas were fostering through AnimalSave. Mickey, an elderly woman with debilitating arthritis, has been looking and looking for a “doggy.” She had been turned down several times based on her age, condition and yard. While the dog the Batistas were fostering did not work out for Mickey, they made it their personal mission to find her a dog and prepare her yard for her new companion. The search was long and continuous until one day Mickey got a call from her sister-in-law in Washington, who reported she was dying. She had two little Pomeranians that she was very worried about as she didn’t know what would happen to them when she was gone. How fortunate that Mickey was looking for a dog, as she agreed to take the two Pomeranians. Mickey is about to set out on a journey to Washington to pick up her new doggies. Only one step to go: Mickey still needs a fence. The Batistas have agreed to bear the expense of the fence but are having trouble finding reasonable help to build it. If you have some skill in this regard and can show a little kindness, please pass it on. Contact Ed or Christine Batista at 470-8981. If you would like to donate to help Mickey and others like her find a companion pet, please send donations to Ma & Paw Pet Sanctuary, a Non-Profit Corporation, 220 Boulder St., Nevada City CA 95959. Your donation is tax-deductible.
