Cheap Security System: Grass Valley Gary has a suggestion for all you ladies: “Go to a second-hand store, buy a pair of men’s used work boots – a really big pair. Put them outside your front door on top of a copy of Guns and Ammo magazine. Put a dog dish beside it … a really big dog dish.

Leave a note on your front door that says something like “Bubba, big Mike and I have gone to get more ammunition – back in a hour. Don’t disturb the Pitbulls – they’ve just been wormed.” Seriously, Gary said he knew a widow in L.A. who kept a big pair of men’s shoes by her door.

Spaghetti dinner to support Union Hill: Debbie Schorcht told me that the Union Hill Sports Boosters are holding their 17th Annual Spaghetti Dinner on March 29 in the multi-purpose room at Union Hill School. It’s from 5 to 7 p.m., cost $5 for adults and $3 for children ages third to eighth grade. “It’s a great meal for the price and all proceeds benefit the sports programs at Union Hill school,” Debbie said. Questions? Call her at 273-0419.

Lights on Highway 49: A gentleman from Penn Valley called to tell me he recently drove Highway 49 all the way to Combie Road on a clear day and counted 144 cars WITHOUT their lights on. C’mon, people!

Teddy Bear Party: On Saturday, all girls in kindergarten through third-grade who are not in Girl Scouts are invited to a Teddy Bear Party from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Madelyn Helling Library. Bring a parent and a teddy bear. The event is free. To reserve your space please contact Cheryl at (530) 477-7997, or Patti at (800) 322-4475 Ext. 2807 or e-mail Hosted by Girl Scouts of Tierra del Oro.

Dealing with whiners and complainers: Jim from Old Barn Self Storage told me this tip. After listening to someone complain, simply say “Better than Baghdad.” As Jim puts it, “Did you wake up in your own bed this morning? Better than Baghdad. Was there any mortar fire outside your door or in your house? Better than Baghdad.” Puts things in perspective, doesn’t it?

Rotary Radio Auction: My Rotary Club (Nevada City) will be on KNCO Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. taking bids for everything from dinners in town to vacations, services, and more. One of the items up for bid is lunch for four and a tour of the Capital with Secretary of State Bruce McPherson! Call 470-2006 – use the circular that was in The Union on Tuesday for lists of items. Or, go to for bid items and current bid. I’ll be answering the phones (along with 15 other people) and I’ll be on the radio with John Hensley from 10-11 a.m. All proceeds benefit the youth of Nevada County!

Dixie Redfearn can be reached at 477-4238 or by e-mail at, or by fax at 477-4292.

Sharon Seck: Kudos to Yuba Docs

I cannot say enough good things about Yuba Docs, our urgent care facility in Grass Valley. Saturday about noon, a close relative had a close encounter with a chainsaw resulting in a pretty deep-looking gash…
