Canal lovers: If you’re a user of the wonderful NID canals around Nevada County, you might want to consider joining the “Save Our Historic Canals” group. Its next meeting is March 21 (a week from today) at 7:30 p.m. at the Madelyn Helling Library in the Community Room. The group will recap its activities and the evening’s speaker will be Terry Mayfield, retired NID water operations manager. He will speak on “Early Mining Ditches and Water Rights in the Sierra.” Refreshments will be served. For information, call Susan Luhman at 265-5234.

Women and Social Security: Passed along to us from Susan Rogers. “At last night’s business meeting of the Northern Mines Business & Professional Women, fact sheets on how women and families would be affected by the proposed changes in Social Security were handed out. These fact sheets, prepared by the National Women’s Law Center in Washington, D.C., are available to anyone by visiting http://www.nwlc.org.” Click “Social Security” on the home page, then “Social Security Factsheets.” I like how readers look after one another!
