Weirdness at KNCO: Received a call Monday night that something strange was going on at STAR 94, KNCO’s FM station. The caller said there was some rant by an extremist that definitely wasn’t regular programming. I tried to get the station a few minutes later and could only get KPFA in Berkeley. General Manager Bob Breck said the transmitter went down for a time Monday late afternoon to early evening, throwing the station off the air. That enabled the Berkeley station’s signal to “get through” to Nevada County. I’m sure many of you heard that strange programming, so I want you to know all is well at the local station!

Wine and movie trivia: Rod Byers passed this along. “This comes courtesy of John Gaunt, who works at Nevada City Winery. In the movie ‘Sideways,’ Miles (the wine geek) says some unflattering things about Merlot and Cabernet Franc. At the same time he is saving, as the signature bottle in his wine collection, a 1961 Cheval Blanc. This is peculiar because Cheval Blanc is made from two-thirds Merlot and one-third Cabernet Franc. It seems unlikely that the movie’s writers would have been unaware of this. It is, after all, a very famous wine. It seems more likely to be one more indication of their disrespect for the rest of us as wine consumers.” OK, then.

Taco Night: Every year many students in the eighth-grade take a trip to Washington, D.C., to learn more about our government. While some parents can afford to pay the cost of the trip, many cannot. Union Hill Educational Trip Inc. (UHET) is a nonprofit organization designed to assist those eighth-grade students in the fund-raising so that they may go to New York and Washington in June for an educational adventure. An upcoming fund-raiser is a Taco Night, sponsored by Charlie’s Angels Cafe at 145 South Auburn St. Grass Valley. (By the way, I think Charlie’s Angels Cafe is going to be just Charlie’s in the future – at least what’s what it said in the Legal Ads in The Union). Taco Night will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Cost is $10 for two tacos, rice and beans. Drinks are available for $1 at the event. Students will be serving, seating, greeting and cleaning – aka working for their keep! To purchase a ticket, contact Shannon at 273-2411 or Janet at 273-5277, or visit Charlie’s Angels Cafe before the event or purchase at the door – limited tickets available at the door.
