Help the Community/Senior Center: Its fund-raiser, the “Not So Silent Auction” is happening Thursday and organizers have a bunch of cool stuff for you to bid on. Some of the donated items include: Gas barbecue from B&C True Value Hardware; bulbs from Peaceful Valley Farm Supply; a cord of oak firewood; $200 gift certificate from Sierra Timberline; lunch or dinner for two at Cirino’s, Diego’s, New Moon, Paulette’s, Daddy’s Little Grill, South Pine Café, BellaVista Ristorante, Flour Garden, Larry and Lena’s Pizza, Hollywood Sweets; something from Mountain Pastimes; tickets for videos, movies, Music in the Mountains; gifts from Taylor Michaels, Tanglewood Forest, Accent Lighting; something from Mark Davis Plumbing; stuff to pamper yourself; Red Hat items; books; haircuts; manicures; miscellaneous collectibles and other gifts. Doors at the Senior Center open at 5 p.m. on Thursday. There will be appetizers and harpist Lisa Stine will provide the music while you browse the many items up for bid. Bo Littig is the auctioneer this year. Admission is free. For more info, call 273-4961. The Senior/Community Center is at Gate 2 at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

Old Time Rock ‘n’ Roll: If you’re – ahem – of a certain age and you remember that great old rock ‘n’ roll, you will want to catch “Jimmi Accardi’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Party” on KVMR this afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. I defy you to listen to this show and not get up and dance – even if you’re driving in your car. He’s on every Monday afternoon and I’d suggest you give him a listen. It’s like taking a rocker’s trip down Memory Lane. The station is 89.5 FM.

Knitting for everyone: Reader Sandy Kewman told me she read a recent story in our paper about how men and boys are taking up knitting and she wanted me to let readers know that there are two places in our community for beginners and experienced knitters alike. Fibers is at 101 Bank St. in Grass Valley (where Taylor-Michaels used to be) and Meadow Farm is at 821 Zion St. in Nevada City.

Ramblings of a retired person: These were sent in by a reader:

• The cost of living hasn’t affected its popularity

• One nice thing about egotists: They don’t talk about other people.

• What’s another word for thesaurus?

• I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don’t know what to feed it.

I am writing in regards to the “Stop the Mines” signs I am seeing around town. Grass Valley is known to be a mining town. If not for the mines our beautiful city might not…
