Pilot Peak: Anyone know how Pilot Peak in the Penn Valley vicinity got its name?

Attorney phone: Recently reporter George Boardman wrote a business story about wills and trusts that quoted attorney Christine Batista of Ruby and Batista. Unfortunately, due to an error in the Yellow Pages, Christine’s phone number is not listed under attorneys. Because we’ve received some calls from people trying to reach her, I’ll list her number here: 470-8981.

Nevada County Reads: There is a “Book Club Night” coming up on Tuesday at Miners Foundry from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. All book club members are invited to attend this free event to participate in a discussion of “Fahrenheit 451.” Meet other book lovers and hear a lively discussion. Questions? Call Stan Miller at 292-4221.

More on Eastern Star: Yes, there is another local Chapter of Eastern Star order. Evangeline Chap. No. 9, of Nevada City, celebrated its 135th some years ago, having helped establish Grand Chapter of California in 1873! Roberta Day e-mailed me that she will be going to Aurora/Placer’s 125th. Roberta has attended Nevada Lodge No. 13’s 100th, 125 and 150th, to say nothing of all those in between.

Safe Kids Nevada County: This group is holding a free car seat check-up at Jim Keil Chevrolet on Sunday from 11a.m. to 3.p.m. Experts say 92 percent of car seats that get checked are installed incorrectly. People might think their car seats are in right – but they owe it to their children to find out for sure. The seat will be checked by certified car seat technicians. Safe Kids Nevada County is a brand new chapter of Safe Kids, which is a nationwide organization.
