Put another candle on the birthday cake: For Nevada City resident Ginny Knott, who turns ?? today! (You don’t think I’d tell my friend’s age, do you?) Ginny’s the reason I moved to Nevada County, because we went to high school together in Whittier and I would visit her after she moved here in the early ’80s. Have a wonderful day, Ginny!
Like speaking to a group? I read somewhere that the biggest fear people have is standing up and speaking in front of people. Some fear that more than death. Well, Toastmasters would like to change all that. Courtney Ferguson of Grass Valley wants everyone to know there is a special meeting Friday night at 7 called Circle Friday to introduce people to Toastmasters. Now, first of all, you don’t have to speak Friday night. While the members of Toastmasters speak, you can just enjoy it and see if that group is for you. The meeting will be at the Superintendent of Schools office near the Gold Flat exit in the Fellerson Room. It’s free. For more information, call Courtney at 271-0775.
Handy cleaning hints: These came from a reader:
• Dirt: Layers of dirty film on windows and screens provide a helpful filter against harmful and aging rays from the sun. Call it a SPF factor of 15 and leave it alone.
• Guests: If unexpected company is coming, pile everything unsightly into one room and close the door. As you show your guests through your tidy home, rattle the door knob vigorously, fake a growl and say, “I’d love you to see our den, but Fluffy hates to be disturbed and shots are SO expensive.”
Day of the Dead: Reader Susan Forte wants readers to know there is a wonderful window display at the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City. “It’s one of the most attractive windows I’ve seen there, colorful and playful,” Susan wrote in an e-mail. Also, she reminds me that the Altar Show is coming up at the Fairgrounds. There will be a full story in an upcoming Prospector, but I would encourage everyone to attend the Altar Show. It is a profound experience every year. One of my colleagues, Ella O’Bryan, will have an altar there in memory of Kevin Wiser, a reporter for The Union who died a little more than a year ago. He was a great guy. I still miss him.
Sierra Travel: If you see Stacy Hart, owner of the travel agency and a Nevada City Rotarian, ask her about her recent “owie.”
