Contest celebrates real women
A while back, our area high school seniors were invited to participate in an essay competition and write about a local, living woman they admired.
The contest winners and the subjects they wrote about will gather with members of the Northern Mines Business and Professional Women for the 17th Annual Real Women Creative Writing Competition awards dinner.
The event starts with no-host cocktails at 5:30 p.m., March 24, at the Grass Valley Elks Lodge, and tickets cost $15 per person or two for $25.
Winning essayists are Lindsey Patin, first place, who wrote about Deputy DA Katy Francis; Lauren Peirce, second place, who wrote about stunt rider Shirley Jauregui; Jessica Kelly, third place, writing about insurance business owner Lorie Straka; and Emily Spencer, Alex Bernadett and Napala Pratini, who received honorable mentions. Editor Jeff Pelline was one of the judges.
Send your checks before March 18 to Northern Mines BPW, c/o 111 Bawden Ave., Grass Valley, CA 95945.
