Male to female ratio: We recently had a story about the fact that there are more than 1.5 men for every woman in Truckee. Reader Denise Cain of Nevada City said that she spent some time in the Yukon, where there are many, many more men than women and the winters can get to 40 below. Denise said she and her friends had a saying about the abundance of men there: “The odds are good – but the goods are odd.” Kinda sums it up, huh?

World famous: Can somebody tell me how a restaurant that isn’t a chain can say its tacos are world famous? That’s the sign on Paco’s Tacos, recently opened in Grass Valley across from the Swiss House. I don’t think the owner had a restaurant until this one opened (about two weeks ago) so how can the tacos be world famous? Am I being too nit-picky? It just seems like people say stuff these days whether it’s true or not.

Hearing things? Remember when I wrote about Otto, who was hearing entire conversations that seemed to be coming out of the air vents of his house? (His wife heard them, too.) Anyway, reader Kit Britt (cool name!) sent me an e-mail asking if perhaps Otto has an African Grey? “They are excellent mimics. I used to pet sit for a couple who had African Greys and Macaws. They would talk back and forth in their owners’ voices and imitate the answering machine. Another bird I cared for would be making stock trades when I arrived. His cage was in his owner’s office; his owner was a stock broker.”
