Music and ice cream: If you have never heard the Grass Valley Male Voice Choir, you’re missing something. They are fantastic! (By the way, has Arnold taken over the word “fantastic?” I almost can’t say it without thinking of our governor’s pronunciation, “faantasstiic.”) You have an opportunity to hear them sing and slurp ice cream on Saturday night at 6 at the Ice Cream Social & Song event at the United Methodist Church, 236 Church St., in Grass Valley. It’s $10 for adults and $5 for children.

Writer on tour: Wylene Dunbar of Nevada City called after she returned home from a book tour of the south supporting her second novel, “My Life With Corpses.” It’s not about real dead bodies, really, but more about life and being full of life. I heard her read at The Book Seller a few weeks ago … she drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. The Book Seller has signed copies, by the way.

Oh, and I learned an interesting fact about large, chain bookstores. When books are displayed prominently in the front of the store, publishers pay for that placement. I had no idea! Kind of like the chain grocery stores being paid to display items at the end of rows or at eye level.

Tribute to Cassie: Tom Gleason of Rough and Ready didn’t know Cassie Schley-May – who died in a tragic car accident on Highway 49 recently – but he had mutual friends who knew her, and he realized she touched many people here in her short life. He wrote this poem about her:

Our Beloved Friend

When we were born

Our lives were unknown to us

As we grew, the Spirit of Awareness

Was kindled out of our experiences

Shaping us into

Each Unique Individual

Whom you eventually found

On those days

Our lives became known to us…

In such a way

As to illuminate Our Beings

From within

Making our lives

Rich…in the fullness

Of Sharing

So how can we now deal

With the loss of you?

The Loss of You

This utter emptiness

Which yawns so contemptuously

Without caring?

Our Hearts go out to you

But they won’t come home

Yet we know

The Spirit of Awareness

Came not from nothing…

It was focused and brought together

As yours has now been freed into the stars

Know that we long to be with you

But we will Live For You now

And tomorrow…We’ll be free together

ooo
