Looking for old-timers: Peggy and Howard Levine, who own the Swan-Levine House bed and breakfast, have a wonderful scrapbook guests can peruse about the early years of the B&B. It was the site of the W.C. Jones Memorial Hospital, still located at 328 S. Church St. Many of you may remember Dr. Jones, and Peggy is hoping that people will share either pictures or memories of the hospital so she can add to the scrapbook. It was a hospital from 1906 to 1968. Did you visit someone there? Perhaps have a baby there? Peggy would love to hear from you. Call her at 272-1873.

Nevada County 101: If you are new to the area or are retired and looking for some meaningful activities, I can’t say enough about the Nevada County civil grand jury. The current grand jury is having a short informational meeting 7 p.m. Monday at the Penn Valley Community Association on Spenceville Road. Rick Paulson, who is a member of the current grand jury, wants interested folks to come to the meeting and get a feel for what the experience would be like. The day I talked to Rick, he had just gone on a tour of our jail, which he called “very interesting.” The civil grand jury is a time commitment of 15 to 30 hours a month, and you’re a sworn officer of the court. It’s a great way to get to know people and gain a better understanding of our community. If you want additional information, give Rick a call at 432-2533.

Elks Web site: The Grass Valley Elks have been hard at work on a new Web site, and it’s a beauty. C.J. Bryant told me to check it out, and they’ve really done a nice job. The site has historical photos if you’re into that kind of thing and also has information on renting the Elk’s Lodge for events. The Web address is
