Vimala Rodgers loves the alphabet, any alphabet. And not only does she love letters and typography, she’s made it one of her passions. Now you’re probably thinking she collects examples of typography and this is a nice little hobby. Wrong. If you’ve ever met Vimala, you would know just how wrong.

First of all, she’s a fireball of a woman. Her enthusiasm is remarkable. To list all her accomplishments would take more room that I have in this small column. Let’s just say she’s a mother of eight (!) with a doctorate. Can you say high achiever?

She’s the founder of The Vimala Rodgers Institute of Handwriting Studies and has written a book that is now in its fifth printing, “Your Handwriting Can Change Your Life.” That’s a big claim, and Vimala believes it in her soul.

“I’m fascinated with letters. The way we write reflects our self image,” Vimala said as she peered across the table where I was taking notes. Suddenly I felt self-conscious about my handwriting… were my letters OK? Is my inner demon revealed in my handwriting?

Vimala assures me that, with a few minor changes, my handwriting could change my life.

“The only way you’ll know it is to do it,” she said, before charging on to the next topic. She has so many phrases and words of wisdom that a conversation with her is peppered with philosophy, religion, education and the spiritual realm. You never know what she’s going to say next.

“Say, ‘I may be wrong,’ twice a day,” Vimala said. “You’ll be amazed what can happen.”

Another Vimalaism: “Preach the gospel at all times. Use words if necessary.”

Did I mention she’s almost 69 and looks 40?

“I knew since I was little that there was more to letters than just their shape. My doctorate is in religious studies – every alphabet in the world has a spiritual tradition behind it.”
