Cancer tests: First of all, I really want to thank all the people who called and e-mailed regarding my anxiety over my annual cancer checkup. I heard from a lot of people who also deal with this unique form of worrying, but I also heard from many folks who said they realized their problems weren’t so bad when put in the perspective of life-or-death medical challenges. Up until Monday afternoon, this was going to be a brief, “I’m fine, OK for another year” type of item, but I got some news from my doctor that the blood that came back from the lab had some disturbing levels in a couple of areas – so, more tests for me. I’m trying not to freak out about it … there’s not much I can do at this point, anyway.

Small world: Or, six degrees of separation. Bill Kroot stopped in at The Union to tell me an interesting fact. He was Dr. Jeff Kane’s chemistry teacher at Van Nuys High School in Southern California. Isn’t it amazing that they both ended up in Nevada County?

Bridge stars: Peg Slocum of Lake of the Pines told me that she, Maxine Musick of Grass Valley and Stan Ausman of LOP recently competed in the $12,000 Bridge Pro Tour tournament in Reno. They didn’t make the cut for the final round, but Peg did win the Consolation Game. Marilyn Ausman of LOP competed and won second place in the Stratified Limited Cash Game. Peg said there were 80 players in the first event of the Bridge Pro Tour from all over the United States. And if bridge is your game, there will be a game Jan. 30 at the Golden Empire Grange in Grass Valley at 12:30 p.m. Players will be expected to play Goren Basic Card or Standard American Yellow Card, and winners will be entered in the March Bridge Pro Tour event in Reno. Call 268-0618 for more information.

Getting older – and better: Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Wellness Center Pharmacy Manager (does that fit on a business card?) Neil Massoud will teach a free class titled “Aging Gracefully” on Feb. 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Outpatient Conference Area. It will cover diet, antioxidants, vitamins, skin care, muscle toning and selected protein supplements. Preregistration is required. Call 274-6824 to register.
