Watch an artist at work

How do you like the idea of getting up close and personal with an artist while she’s working at her canvas?

If you’re interested, here’s your chance.

Local artist Jan Newell will work on a series of oil paintings she’s calling “The Costa Rican Collection” from 8 to 11 a.m. July 19 and 20 on the patio of Broad Street Bistro in Nevada City. The series is inspired by Newell’s trip to Costa Rica.

Newell’s canvases also will be displayed at the bistro throughout July.

Newell graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She was a commercial artist working in the toy and software industries before turning to painting full-time.

You can reach Newell at 273-5876 or see her work online at http://www.jannewell.com.

HOSPICETHANKS

VOLUNTEERSFORFundraiser

The folks at Friends of Hospice, a nonprofit supporting Hospice of the Foothills, want to thank everyone in the community who helped them raise more than $1,000 per person during their annual Jail and Bail fundraiser last month.

The community members who helped bring in donations are Keoni Allen, Judy Armstrong, Jim Chiesa, Terry and Larry Collins, Dan Gentile, Leo Grannuci, Steve Haas, Anthony Halby, Marilee Imamoto, Patti Ingram-Spencer, Rich Kahil, Rich Keene, Barbara Kosher, Dr. Brad Miller, Kaity Montre, Mary and Andy Owens, Andrew Pawlowski, Pieter Rossi, Randy Young and Chuck Zavitz.

The May fundraiser generated about $28,000 for the hospice, Executive Director Dennis Fournier said.

They’re building the area’s first in-house facility just west of Grass Valley, and trying to raise $7.5 million. To donate, you can call 272-5739.

Volunteers needed at county animal shelter

Are you diehard dog lover or a chronic cat cuddler? If yes, the Nevada County Animal Shelter needs you.

This summer, a number of volunteers with the shelter are moving away, causing a shortage of people to walk dogs and cuddle cats.

So if you’re interested, call Shirley Falls at 273-2179 or visit the shelter and fill out a form to become a volunteer.
