Jay Maple and Sen. Edward Kennedy have something in common.

They’ve both been diagnosed with glioblasoma, a cancer of the brain. Jay’s been undergoing surgery, radiation, chemo and MRI monitoring since he was diagnosed last October.

Jay has lived in the area more than three decades, and readers may know him from Little League or his work at a local electrical business. His friends at Christian Life Center are offering a production of “Fish Eyes,” a comic look at the Gospels through the eyes of two fishermen, to raise money to help Jay with his expenses.

The play goes on at 7 p.m. June 7 at the church at 13010 Highway 49, just south of Grass Valley. Bidding on a silent auction of donated items and services from local merchants starts at 6:30.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at KNCO, Wayside Bookstore, Ernie’s Van and Storage, Briarpatch Co-op or at the door. Donation to Jay’s trust account can be made to FBO Jay Maple and sent to Bank of the West, 460 Brunswick Rd., Grass Valley.

For more info, call Jay’s sister, Shirley McDonald, at 265-5545.

This from Hindi Greenberg, who says one of the great things about living here is the relatively few bugs encountered at picnics:

“A fun way to spend a June evening is to gather a group of relatives, friends or colleagues from work, pack a picnic dinner, and attend Music in the Mountains’ Broadway Pops concert on June 28, outdoors at the Nevada County Fairgrounds.

“While you enjoy good food – how about fried chicken and apple pie? – you can listen to wonderful music, look up at the gorgeous pine trees and stars, and think how lucky you are to live in Nevada County!

“You might want to bring various wines and have a wine tasting with your friends while you wait for the concert to begin. And the best part – if you have a group of 10 or more, you can take advantage of MIM’s group discounts. See you at the concert – I’ll be there with my picnic basket.”
