Another side to

buying locally

At Dave’s Shoe Repair in downtown Grass Valley, used shoes are piling up on the wooden shelves.

Black dressy shoes, pink sandals, strappy silver numbers, gray work boots and brown Mary Janes are waiting – and waiting – for their owners.

“This usually happens after Christmas and tax time,” Dave said, “but this is lasting a long time.”

How many other small, local businesses like Dave’s have invested in an order taken in good faith, just to have the work sit unclaimed?

Kudos to local

Charles Heinkel noticed spotter planes flying over his Nevada City-area home, and it inspired him to think of the local men and women fighting blazes elsewhere.

“It is impossible to express (my) gratitude to these people for endangering their lives by containing the fires which will be threatening all of us,” Charles writes.

Champagne for water

The deadline is today to reserve tickets for a champagne brunch and silent auction to support the Rotaract Club’s mission to help build water and sanitation projects in Uganda.

The event will be at 10:30 a.m. June 8 at the Odd Fellow’s Hall in Nevada City. Tickets are $45 and include the brunch by Jim Es Catering, a silent auction, free-flowing champagne from Sierra Star Winery, live music and a slideshow of the water crisis in Uganda.
