Ranchers best understand land’s carrying capacity

This letter is to all the longtime residents, ranchers, farmers and land owners who are opposed to Natural Heritage 2020. I recently had a conversation with one of you who said he was a good steward of the land. I’m sure he is, as most of you are. I’d like to thank you for taking such good care of it.

That gentleman also told me that NH 2020 would kill people. Now I’m not exactly sure what he meant by that, but in my mind exactly the opposite will happen. More and more people are moving to our lovely county. While you have, and most likely will continue to take care of your land, those new people don’t all have the deep love we have for this county. With no emotional investment in our county, they may not take care of it as we have.

Look around. There are unthinkable atrocities being committed in this country. People don’t always act as they should. Irresponsible development can occur, fouling our air and water, and causing more traffic congestion. All you ranchers know that your land has only a certain carrying capacity. If you put too many cows on a pasture, they all suffer. I believe we should all work together and get behind NH 2020.

The Board of Supervisors should be commended for being looking ahead to protect our county. This is not about taking away anyone’s property rights, but about protecting what we have. Most of us wish things could be the way they used to be, but unfortunately, things change. Let’s plan for the future.
