Raise money other ways

I would like to commend your staff on yesterday’s very timely commentary on the use of fireworks. I was driving in the Gold Hills Business District of Nevada City recently and noted with alarm the many fireworks stands which are present.

In discussing this danger with a local government official, I asked why such stands were allowed in our beautiful, but dry, area and he said it was a traditional fund-raiser for many of the youth groups.

I would glady donate to a youth group rather than have them sell fireworks. Or, couldn’t they sell flags, red/white/blue streamers, decorated cakes and cupcakes, etc., instead? Let’s have Nevada County become the most patriotically decorated, fire-free county in the State!

I would remind everyone that the use of fireworks, even safe and sane, is only legal in certain city/park areas. I for one, intend to lodge complaints against those who use them illegally. There are always several that I can view from my porch here in South County.
