A benefit for the new Laura Wilcox Scholarship Fund raised $2,400 Saturday, which will cover the first year of the award.

The money was raised at Brains of Nevada County 2002, a trivia contest involving 11 teams at John Woolman School. Team members answered questions such as, “Who is wearing the glasses in Grant Wood’s painting ‘American Gothic?'” (The farmer.)

The winning team was The Ridge Rats, led by Michael Killigrew, which included the late Wilcox’s parents, Amanda and Nick Wilcox. Second place was taken by The Van Doren Allstars, led by Kerri Timmer.

The scholarship is administered by the South Yuba River Citizens League in honor of Wilcox, the Nevada County teen-ager killed in the January 10, 2001, shooting at the Nevada County Behavioral Health facility.

The scholarship will be offered annually to high school seniors living in the Yuba and Bear River watersheds who have a commitment to the environment. Applicants must maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and have an interest in pursuing environmental studies.
