Quiet Hero – Susan Black

Name: Susan Black

Age: 60

Hometown: Nevada City

The group I volunteer for: The Doris Foley Library for Historical Research.

What I do for the library: Mostly just assist people who come in to let them know what’s in here because there’s so much.

How I got involved: My godfather died last June, and his children wanted to know some family history, and I volunteered. With two permanent staff members, they need all the help they can get.

Why I think the library’s work is important: A lot of people have gone to a lot of trouble and a lot of work, and it’s here for casual people and people researching their families

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: Becoming acquainted with what’s in here and seeing people get excited about what they’ve found.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: It helps me understand my community, what it was, why my family came here and why they stayed. The past is a window on the future.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: None.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: 38 years.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: Staying economically solvent.

I think volunteerism is important because: If volunteers don’t do it, who will? Otherwise, someone would have to be hired to do what volunteers do.
