Quiet Hero – Ruth McLachlin

Dave Moller

Age: That’s nobody’s business, but I’m 73.

The group I volunteer for: HelpLine.

What I do for the group: I answer the phones and give people information. It’s for anyone that needs information about services. It’s not just for seniors; it’s for Nevada County residents of all ages.

How I got involved: I just felt I could give something back, so I called.

Why I think this group’s work is important: Because if you’re in need of something and you don’t know where to find it, we can give you a suggestion. We don’t make the solution; we help them find it.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: I get the feeling that we really are helping. Other people have helped me, so I wanted to help people.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: When you call people back that you’ve helped and they’re happy with the resources you found, that’s when you get the good feelings.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: My kids were in 4-H and I was a teacher’s aide.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: Since 1956.

I think volunteerism is important because: Without volunteers, a lot of services wouldn’t be made available. The organizations couldn’t exist.
