The group I volunteer for: Penn Valley Hospice Gift and Thrift, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Consulting for the Elderly.

What I do for the group: For Hospice, I repair electric and electronic equipment, anything with a plug on it. For the tax groups, we assist people with their income tax preparation.

How I got involved: With Hospice, I like to fix things, and it was a way to keep my brain active. I just volunteered. I called the Nevada County Helpline with a question about my own taxes and the district coordinator said “you must know something about taxes,” and he asked me to volunteer.

Why I think this group’s work is important: It takes quite a person to hold someone’s hand who is dying. With taxes, I’ve had several little old ladies whose husbands have died and are terrified of the IRS, and they leave happy.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: The little old ladies no longer afraid of the IRS.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: You feel good about helping people.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: None.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: 14 years.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: I think we should be a community that is oriented toward taking care of the elderly. That should be our main occupation up here.

I think volunteerism is important because: To keep active.
