Quiet Hero: Richard Marundee

The group I volunteer for: The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad and Transportation Museum.

What I do for the group: I do a lot of everything. I do woodworking on cars and some of the metal maintenance, and I’m on the track crew.

How I got involved: I’ve always been interested in railroading, so I joined the historical society and noticed they had a transportation division. I came down and volunteered.

Why I think this group’s work is important: It’s important to produce a little bit of history to make people realize what the railroad did for the development of the area. If it wasn’t for the railroad back then, a lot of these little towns wouldn’t exist.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: It’s the people that I’m working with. We have so much interest and fun.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: I look forward to coming down here and seeing the dedication to doing things right. It shows up when the visitors come through; they’re amazed at the amount of work we’ve done here to preserve our railroad heritage in the area. It’s nice to have people appreciate what you’re doing.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: When I first came I volunteered with the VFW, and I volunteer with my church, St. Canice, in the men’s group.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: For 15 years.

I think volunteerism is important because: It’s important for the relationships you get with other people and for participating in something that’s worthwhile. There’s a lot of self-satisfaction in doing it.
