Quiet hero – Jan Bauer

The group I volunteer for: Penn Valley Hospice Gift and Thrift.

What I do for the group: I price and sort the donations that come in. I wash and dry the clothes on Wednesday.

How I got involved: Through a friend. She was a volunteer here, and she said to come down, and I’ve been here now going on five years.

Why I think this group’s work is important: It serves the community and especially those who really need help at a low time in their life.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: You meet a lot of people.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: It’s a good break in my week and I look forward to it.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I was a tutor through the library in Napa preparing a student for college.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: Seven years.

I think volunteerism is important because: For me, it gets me out of the house and gets me acquainted with the community. It’s certainly a much-needed service in any community.
