Quiet Hero – Evelyn Stecher

The group I volunteer for: The Literacy Council of Nevada County.

What I do for the group: I train the tutors.

How I got involved: When I came up here I told them “I know how to do this,” so they said come and do it. I was part of a large volunteer program in L.A. for English as a second language. I started the training program there.

Why I think this group’s work is important: It really has to do with our own community. If we can get them to understand English and our ways it will be better for our children and their children. We want them to be part of the community, not outsiders. Ethnic groups are growing here.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: I think seeing the excitement of the tutors when they get matched with their first student.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: It gives life a sense of purpose to do something meaningful. I’m not the hero; the students are. They come here to work for their families, sometimes two jobs, and then they fit in a class. The tutors touch other people’s lives.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: In L.A., the program there took over my volunteer life.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: 10 years.

I think volunteerism is important because: We just don’t have the means to pay for everything that needs to be done. Volunteering ties us to our community.
