The group I volunteer for: The Senior Center.

What I do for the group: I volunteer at the front desk one day a week and I’m the front desk coordinator.

How I got involved: I saw an ad in The Union from RSVP, and I had just retired from the school district and I wanted to switch to seniors.

Why I think this group’s work is important: It fills a real need because there are a lot of seniors in this community. They need a center they can come to for resources and to ease loneliness.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: Just having a brand new group of friends.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: I’m glad I can help people and lead them to resources they need. I learn lots from them, too.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I volunteered for Little League, and I did a short stint with RSVP as a friendly volunteer. I volunteered in my kids’ classrooms for a lot of years.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: About 27 years.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: I think there’s a lot we need to do for the children. The drug problem is awful. We all need to work together and solve things.

I think volunteerism is important because: There’s a great need for volunteers and it enriches people lives. It feels good to help and interact with the seniors. There’s so much you learn.
