Quiet Hero – Cati Lacorazza

The group I volunteer for: The Nevada County Association for the Developmentally Disabled.

What I do for the group: I am the president.

How I got involved: When we moved here in 2000, I found out through Larry Mason about the group’s annual ski trip, so I volunteered.

Why I think this group’s work is important: It gives our children an opportunity to develop physically, emotionally and socially in a threat-free environment.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: Just seeing the happiness of these children.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: I get internal happiness knowing that I’m doing this for these kids.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I’m an occupational therapist, and I’ve always helped people outside of my work in their homes.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: Since 2000.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: We need to make people more aware of the needs of people with disabilities. They need more jobs and more understanding.

I think volunteerism is important because: Everybody should volunteer for inner growth and to help other people grow. I think people would feel happier by volunteering.
