Quiet Hero – Allison Blackham

The group I volunteer for: Nevada Union High School Choir Boosters.

What I do for the group: I am the choir boosters’ president this year. I coordinate fund-raisers and work with the choir director to do what the school district budget can’t cover. I also chair the madrigal dinner, which is our largest fund-raiser.

How I got involved: My children have been involved in Nevada Union’s choir program for nine years.

Why I think this group’s work is important: Because music actually helps people in more ways than are readily apparent. Kids involved in music tend to get better grades and it enhances their education.

The best thing that ever happened to me on this volunteer job was: I’ve been able to tour Europe twice and see people who were amazed at the quality of the singing and see the looks on the kids faces when they realize where they are and what they are doing.

The rewards I get from this volunteer job are: I love the music and I love to see the kids excited about the music.

Other volunteer jobs I’ve done: I’ve done Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. I’m a volunteer in my church and in schools and I taught childbirth classes for free in the community.

I’ve lived in Nevada County: 16 years.

The most important job that faces us as a community is: Taking good care of our children.

I think volunteerism is important because: We each can make a difference in the world on a small scale, which can make a large impact.
