Purse thief: Thanks a lot

This is an open letter to the thief who “found” my purse by the Nevada City Post Office when it dropped out of my car. And yes, you are a thief when you chose not to return it to me. If you had called me or even dropped it in a mailbox, I would have given you a reward.

If you needed the cash, OK, keep it – or even the winning Lotto tickets. But the credit cards, checks, cell phone and health insurance cards will do you no good – they’ve all been canceled. And unless you’re a senior citizen female, you’ll never be able to use my driver’s license for an ID. Thanks for causing me the worry and inconvenience of reissuing those items.

What bothers me most is that our community is known for it’s caring, kind and honest people. We read about them every day in The Union. Now I’ll never look at anyone the same, wondering if my fellow citizens are in fact as good as they appear. I hope your conscience bothers you for a very long time, dear thief.
