Purple elephant, indeed!

I’d like to thank the writer who brought up the “purple elephant” in downtown Grass Valley and for giving me the opportunity to thank Jon Blinder publicly.

Center for the Arts is in the midst of its own artistic renaissance and its current purple color is a small part of a big transition that taking place through the hard work of dedicated volunteers. In answering the rhetorical question, “Why is there a purple elephant … ?” I’d need to point out that before it was purple, the elephant was a patchwork of fix-it-job colors. Center Board President Jon Blinder had listened to enough complaints about its previous appearance so, in his own take-the-bull-by-the-horns way, with his own time and money, he painted it. (He got a good deal on purple paint.)

Another of Jon’s accomplishments has been to arrange for the center to acquire ownership of the building. With that has come installation of a new roof, heating, air conditioning, wiring and plumbing.

Jon Blinder is a dad, Realtor and community volunteer.

I’d like to invite residents down to our board meetings on the first Monday of each month. They’ll meet Jon among other bull-horn-grabbers who are transforming a former ball-bearing factory into one of California’s premier venues for the arts.

By the way … there will be a fund-raiser auction to help pay for more improvements (including a complete face-lift for the building) on Sunday, May 19. If you can help in any way please call.
