Public prayer defended

Regarding the letter to the editor on Jan. 3 titled, “True Christians.” The writer refers to Mathew 6:5-8, and wanted to know how our President praying in public squares with the admonition of Jesus in these verses.

In Mathew 6:1 Jesus said; “Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them.” This Chapter, Mathew 6, is an admonition from Jesus to not be like the religious rulers of that day, who through public displays tried to make themselves look more religious than others. Jesus wants us to humble ourselves before him. This section is not an admonition against public prayer.

Jesus on many occasions prayed in public. The apostles prayed in public. Praying in public is not the issue, it is the heart’s desire that is at issue. Do you pray to look good to others around you, or do you humbly pray to God?

Only the Lord knows our president’s real intention in praying in public. As for my two cents, I believe our president does humbly pray to God, both in public and in private.
