Protect civil rights of all human beings

In 1857, the Supreme Court ruled that blacks were not human and therefore were not entitled to any rights or protection under the Constitution. Were it not for the courage and determination of politicians and civil rights activists, who in many cases gave “the last full measure of devotion” to put an end to this morally bereft idea, racially bigoted politicians and their constituents across America would be “celebrating” the sesquicentennial anniversary of this travesty of justice and civil rights.

Today, many bigots, supported by such groups as Planned Parenthood and our own Nevada County Citizens for Choice “celebrate” the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Dalton Supreme Court decisions of 1973, which also denied the personhood of a large segment of our population. Let us hope that our moral evolution in America will soon extend to protecting the civil rights of the unborn that were abridged by these decisions, and that we as Americans will be able to note with pride not that we have the freedom to subject innocent babies to gruesome deaths in the womb, but that we stand together to protect the civil rights of all human beings from conception to natural death.
