Prop 85 not the best choice for voters

Why don’t doctors practice medicine on family, attorneys defend family in court, or psychologists take family as clients? In a crisis requiring dispassionate analysis and careful consideration of all alternatives, advising family is foolhardy. Judgment can be clouded by intense emotions to a family member in trouble, even with professional training.

My experience as a foster parent and school counselor convinced me, forcing parental notification is a bad idea. Nothing carries more emotional baggage than the parent-child relationship during a daughter’s teens. On the surface, it seems reasonable to require notifying a minor’s parent of a pending medical procedure. We like to imagine all families create loving, supportive environments. We want to believe parents are good people, who rise to an occasion of crisis with the right stuff to help their child, and many do.

But some parents aren’t reliable givers of protection even during everyday life. Add the emotions when a daughter faces an unplanned pregnancy and understand why some girls don’t want to risk letting their parents know. Trust your daughter to come to you if she needs help, and vote no on Prop. 85 to protect those daughters who can’t get protection and help at home.
